Simplifying the authentication process for medical professionals

The Business

The Methodist Hospital directs millions of research dollars into patient care and offers the latest innovations in medical, surgical, and diagnostic techniques. It also maintains various joint programs with other large teaching hospitals in the Texas Medical Center. The Methodist Hospital is among the country's largest non-profit health care providers, and the hospital and its staff were both recognized by Best Doctors, Inc. in their annual Best Doctors in America list.
The Challenge

In order to perform routine tasks, hospital physicians were required to log in to multiple systems every day. Often the credentials needed to log in differed from system to system, causing confusion and difficulty for the medical staff.

In October 2005, the client contacted CPSG for assistance in implementing and configuring one of the leading Identity Management (IdM) User Provisioning (UP) products. This product was also used for implementation of the medical team’s single sign-on initiative. Five key infrastructure and clinical systems were identified for Phase I as targets for provisioning. Further phases are currently in the development process.

After a comprehensive review of all required business objectives, CPSG facilitated architecture evaluations and assessments to determine the ideal approach for building connectors and controls. Based on findings from the assessment, CPSG assembled a team to execute the project plan.

Phase I - User Provisioning

CPSG proposed a complete phased approach for implementing IdM which included:

  • Identify applications with 80% impact on physicians’ daily workflow
  • Analyze technology behind each application space
  • Document the current “As-Is” Change, Remove, Update and Disable (“CRUD”) processes through use of CPSG’s repeatable processes
  • Design options for provisioning to each system and review those designs with user community and technical team
  • Implement chosen provisioning solution for each targeted system to the satisfaction of the medical staff
  • Integrate solution into the software vendor’s management console and train users to administer user ID’s moving forward
